Why Church?

Why would I go to church? And what can I expect to find?

The church, and Christianity itself, is all about relationship. There is your personal relationship with God who Creates, with Jesus Christ who teaches, and with the Holy Spirit who leads and moves within us. As United Methodists, we believe that, whether you know it or not, we are always in relationship with the God of Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This belief is characterized by John Wesley’s (the principal founder of Methodism) theology of grace which states that God does and has always loved each of us. Our spiritual growth proceeds through different levels of awareness of God’s grace and love in our lives.

Another dimension of relationship is the people in the church. As we all struggle to become the people of God, we struggle not only individually, but together! The Christian church is named “the body of Christ” as we consider Christ Jesus to be the founder and authority of The Church universal. As part of the body, we each bring our own questions, successes, and spiritual gifts to the larger group. God loves variety!! (Just look at nature!) So, too, does the church function best with a wide diversity of persons with his or her own interests, talents, skills, and areas of desired growth.

Primary participation in the church is attendance at Sunday morning worship. While it is good to see other people and be sociable, we come to worship because God calls us to do so and we follow our heart in its desire to connect with God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Of course, God plants seeds in us and in the church for visibly being the church outside of the church building. In areas of outreach, witness, missions, care and compassion, the body of Christ is at work in today’s world. The Holy Spirit moves within us and through us as each of us finds areas of personal ministry.

Why church? Because God has not called us to be alone! Our spirits are connected to God’s Holy Spirit and to one another. Come share your spirit with us, as we share with you—and we will journey together on the spiritual path of God’s desire for each of us to fully be the person God created us to be!
